KAREN is a membership organisation providing high capacity, ultra high speed connections to the Research and Education Sector in New Zealand. A key way to augment the value of the advanced network to the eResearch and education community is by through the provision of services over KAREN.
In more mature NREN markets there is a definite trend to the NREN being involved in the provision of services & our 2008 stakeholder survey indicated a strong mandate for REANNZ to have some involvement in the delivery of services in New Zealand.
REANNZ has ventured into services only with its video conferencing service trial. This made sense for REANNZ, as it was a service that was almost universally demanded by Members. The trial was very successful and a permanent video conferencing solution is being developed. For services that have a more developmental or ‘research focused’ aspect to them, e.g. identity management, storage grids, high performance computing, REANNZ, as a neutral body in the R&E sector, has a role in facilitating discussion with the community about what services should be provided over KAREN although REANNZ may not necessarily lead the development of these services.
