In 2007 the Vice Chancellor formed an eResearch Taskforce, mandated with reporting back as to the institutional opportunities and needs related to eResearch. The Taskforce submitted it's final report "The University of Auckland eResearch Task Force Report" in February 2008. The report recommended the establishment of a Centre for eResearch to continue the work of The University of Auckland led BeSTGRID project. The Vice Chancellor accepted this recommendation, confirming the creation of The University of Auckland's Centre for eResearch in March 2008.

The Centre for eResearch is a virtual Centre, hosted within the Research Office. The Centre has a Director and a Manager, and a dedicated technical team within ITS called the eResearch Services Support Team.

The Centre has an Executive Committee, with the following membership:

  • Professor Gordon Mallinson, Chair, Engineering
  • Professor Mark Gahegan, Geography
  • Nick Jones, Computer Science
  • Professor Jane Harding, Research Office
  • Professor Allen Rodrigo, Bioinformatics
  • Professor Peter Hunter, Bioengineering
  • Janet Copsey, Library
  • Professor John Hosking, Computer Science
  • Stephen Whiteside, ITS
  • Tim Chaffe, ITS

Number of projects using KAREN

Approximately 20 projects are using KAREN, across most faculties and with a wide variety of technologies. The following list is indicative, although users and groups are growing their use of KAREN every day, as they become more familiar with the possibilities in their field for video conferencing, web based collaboration, computational science, large scale data storage and analysis, and many other eResearch enabled activities.
